The Nightmare

Rodney Ascher, the director of the documentary Room 237 (amazing doc about The Shining), is back with a new and very scary documentary about sleep paralysis. The Nightmare follows eight people and their very terrifying experiences with sleep paralysis. The movie was featured in this year’s Sundance Film Festival and did really well. It’s coming to theaters in June.

“Sleep paralysis (is a) surprisingly common phenomenon where people wake-up totally frozen from the eyeballs down, unable even to make a noise, and they frequently see sinister intruders and other disturbing visions,” Ascher says. “I’ve been obsessed with it ever since it used to happen with me. In my case, I saw sort of a living, 3D shadow looming over me in judgement.”

Gomantong Caves

Located in Malaysia, this cave is home to a very large bat population–millions of them. It’s not the millions of bats that inhabit this cave that will leave your skin crawling, but the giant bat eating cockroaches. The cockroaches graze on giant mounds of bat poop, called guano, as well as the occasional bat or bird that falls onto the cave floor. If that still doesn’t creep you out then you should check out Gomantong’s humungo centipedes that eat the giant cockroaches.

Description from Angels&Ghosts:

“I took this shot using my camera phone of these three women on the day of their mother’s funeral. Several photos of family members were taken in groups with this particular shot having been reserved for only the three sisters. I noticed after studying the picture months later that there appears to be a fourth figure in the shot; a faceless “dark” man standing behind the middle woman, resting his right hand on her right shoulder. There was no man in this picture at the time it was taken and coincidently, this woman was killed in a car accident not long after the day of this picture.“

The oldest state in Australia, New South Wales, was the site of the first landing by the British in 1788. Eleven ships of the First Fleet set sail from Britain on 13 May 1787, with the leading ship, HMS Supply, reaching Botany Bay and setting up camp on the Kurnell Peninsula on 18 January 1788. For the next 225 years, people lived, and died, in a landscape varied and, at times, harsh and unforgiving.

“In two miles take exit 19 for Valley Park Drive South.” Siri chirped from my sister’s phone.

“Charlotte, turn that off. I know where I’m going.”

“You sure about that? I mean…it has been a couple decades, Mark.”

“Please, like I could ever forget where Adventure Valley is. Come on, we spent every summer of-“

“There it is!” I swerved briefly into the oncoming lane as Charlotte thrust her arm in front of my face to point excitedly out the window. “There’s Adventure Valley! Oh my God, what ride is that? That coaster, it was called ‘Steel’ something, right? No, no, wait, that’s Mayhem Mountain, isn’t it?”

I gently pushed my sister’s arm out of my face and back over to her seat. I couldn’t fault her for her excitement while I was trying so hard to control my own giddiness. It felt like we were kids again, yelling and bouncing in the back seat of my parent’s car as the first shining rails and wooden planks of the park’s roller coasters came into view above the treetops.

“That’s the Steel Viper.” I told her. “Mayhem Mountain’s on the other end of the park. And that wooden coaster over there is the Excalibur.”

“Oh yeah! I remember those! I was always too much of a wus to ride the viper but I rode the shit out of the Excalibur.”

“Well, Charlotte, you’re an adult, now. I think it’s time to take on the Viper.”

“As long as the contractors have tested it and given it the okay, I’m in.”

Room 8 is another short film I would recommend. It has a grim atmosphere. It’s about a man who receives an order to not open a box. It gave me a surrealist creepy vibe.

You can watch it here

Here are other short horror films, I’ve recommended in the past that tumblr users seemed to really enjoy

There are approximately 200 dead bodies on Mount Everest. It’s practically impossible to recover a body from the mountain due to the thin air in the “death zone”. Lack of oxygen can leave the climber weak and bewildered, causing them to pass out and get frostbite. The bodies are just left where they fell and have become landmarks for other climbers. The top photo shows the body of “green boots”, who has been there since 1996.
